Crumpled Notebook

I saw a couple of movies over Christmas and thought I’d give my take on them. I’ll start with the easy one.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I have to say, I’m not a big fan of this type of movie. You know, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings type movies. Fantasy-type stuff. I even referred to it as “Lord of the Rings for kids.” However, it was a good Christmas movie, so I went to see it with Tiffany and Kenny. I was pleasantly surprised. I figured it would be a well-made movie, I just figured I wouldn’t like it much. It was very good, and had a nice and familiar story to it. It didn’t seem to long and drawn out like the Lord of the Rings movies. It was interesting and all happened pretty smoothly. I don’t know. I just liked it. I would recommend it even to people like me who aren’t into fantasy type movies.

Brokeback Mountain
This one is obviously a bit more controversial. I went today to see it with Alisha and was surprised to find it sold out. Since I was off today, I wanted to try and see it today so as to not go during the week. It’s one of those movies I made up my mind to see and have been waiting all weekend to see. So I went back this evening by myself to see it. My reasons for wanting to see it were simply because it looked good and it seemed like a history making type movie. I wanted to form my own opinion on it for that reason. It was a good movie and well acted for the most part. It was sad. I read a lot of reviews that accused it of “promoting” adultery and lying and homosexuality. I didn’t get these things from the movie. I think it portrayed real life for the most part. All of those things are part of our society. Sure, sometimes its nice to see movies with happy stories and happy endings, but those aren’ the things we deal with everyday. Sometimes you need a break from that stuff, and so you go see Narnia movies. Sometimes, you want to feel something for the characters. You want to recognize that yeah, other people suffer and love and feel pain and all that stuff that everyone goes through. Thats when you see this type of movie. The movie left me frustrated and confused. I know certain things are wrong, but I know a lot of things that are wrong. It was just frustrating to see the love these characters had for each other and not knowing what to do with it. They probably didn’t make the best choices, but who always makes the right choices all the time? I just thought it was a good, honest movie about real life, love, pain, happieness and struggles…and the choices we have to make because of those things. It’s not a kids movie obviously, but I think all adults should watch it, with an open mind and get past the “gay cowboy movie” mentality.
