Crumpled Notebook

7 Days with No Internet

Have I lost it? Probably. But here is the deal. Starting this Sunday, I’m going to try and go one entire week, 7 days, with no internet or text messaging. Okay, now, I do have to work, so there will be some exclusions, but for the most part, I’m going to try and be as complete about this as I can. So, here are the ground rules. If you think of something, feel free to make a suggestion.

  • No internet at home. Unplugging my modem.
  • Will only check work email, on my work email system and only respond to what is required.
  • No text messaging, checking email or other websites on cell phone.
  • However, if I receive work related text message (i.e. from the teens, I can respond to that)
  • I WILL check my personal email once per day. Reason being is that not everyone will probably know what I’m doing. I will only respond in a must-reply situation.
  • If work requires me to be online, or a work-type project for someone else pre-planned (working on a couple of websites for people), then I will do only what I am required to do for rhe task.

So, plan is the start Sunday morning when I wake up. The following Sunday when I wake up will be when it’s done. I am thinking about blogging during the week, either by sending an email once a day from my work email to wordpress so it’ll post automatically, or just write/type it out and post it up the following week on the corresponding day. Any suggestions?

Who thinks I can do it?

Instead of checking your personal e-mail, which will be tough to not get wrapped up into, I would suggest a vacation message telling people to call you.

I would do that, but not everything that comes there is “personal” in nature. Also some of the other work I do on other sites, people email me there, so I don’t want to confuse them.

The plan is not to read any of the mail except the ones that would be considered important and to return phone calls when I can rather than replying

I think you should do it right. Be unavailable for 7 days.

Which, brings up the next question, what will you do with your free time? You have to fill the void or you’ll never make it!

hrm, I think the time is wrong in the comments there. Maybe Wordpress didn’t recognize Daylight Savings Time :)

okay, time is def. wrong. maybe 2.5 messed it up somehow.

Anyway, I can’t be unavailable to people that I am technically working for. That wouldn’t bode well for me.

I agree with Jeff on both comments.
No way are you going to be able to look at work mail and leave the personal mail alone. If someone really needs to get to you, they can communicate the “old school” way. They can call. That is why it is called “personal”
What will you do with the time? How about something meaningful! We all have more time than we think. We just aren’t disciplined enough to acknowledge it.
